When planning a family, women and their partners begin to invest in their future as
parents. They may envision their children starting their first day in school, and later
heading on to college to become doctors, lawyers, athletes or just successful adults
living a happy and fulfilling life. As they envision the future, full of hopes and dreams for
each of their children, they are also psychologically and emotionally developing
attachments to their identity as parents and the type of mothers and fathers they dream
of becoming. But what happens when their dreams and hopes are shattered by the loss
of a pregnancy due to a miscarriage or neonatal loss. The results can be devastating.
The loss experience can be difficult and that it most often includes a complex set of
psychological emotions. In addition, grief can also compromise their physical health.
Neonatal loss can lead to a difficult experience because of the nature of the loss.
According to Theresa Rando in her book “Treatment of Complicated Grief,”
miscarriages fall into a category of “Inhibited Grief.” This means that pregnancy loss
from miscarriages or stillbirth most often do not have a social platform to express their
grief. Often women are told hurtful comments such as “don’t worry you didn’t even
know the baby” or “you don’t need grieve because you are young and can try again.”
As a result, often women and their families feel that they have no right to grieve or
minimize their grief as well as experience the lack of social support to process their loss.
For partners or husbands, they struggle as well and often feel helpless and lost in
balancing the support of and processing their own emotions.
Together We Heal Community recognizes the need to support women and families
through their difficult grief experience. Brighter Tomorrow is designed to provide grief
support, education and the dedication to help women, and their families heal and mourn
their loss in a healthy way.
Brighter Tomorrow is an 8-week grief support group experience that will address the
